Statement of Faith

The following are the core beliefs of The Bridge Christian Fellowship based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

OUR CORE

Inspiration of Scriptures

We believe all scripture, both the Old and New Testaments, is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, for correction, and training in righteousness as originally given. They are the final authority for our faith and life.
[2 Timothy 3:16, Hebrews 4:12]

God

We believe in one God revealed in three coequal, distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
[Matthew 3:16-17; 28:19-20; Ephesians 2:18]

Divinity and Humanity of Christ

We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who by His incarnation and virgin birth took upon Himself the form of man. In the one person of Christ, there are two natures, human and divine, each in its completeness and integrity. They are distinguishable but indivisible, so that He is fully man and fully God. He lived a sinless life and became the only sacrifice for the sins of the world.
[Ephesians 1:3-5; Romans 5:1-11; Acts 12:4; 1 Peter 1:18-19; John 1:10-14]

Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit to be the third person of the Godhead who is active in the world today. The Spirit indwells and seals the believer at new birth. We believe the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a subsequent experience and is available to all Christians to empower us to be witnesses. We believe in and encourage the use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
[John 14:16-17; Luke 3:16; Acts 1:4-5;8; Act 2:1-4]

Church

We believe that the Church is Christ’s spiritual body on earth today. It consists of born-again believers and has both universal
and local expressions.
[Matthew 16:18; Acts 20:28]

Ordinances

We believe in water baptism as a public affirmation of faith for the believer; and in regular practice of the Lord’s Supper.
[Acts 2:38; Acts 2:44-47; Romans 6:3-10; 1 Corinthians 10:16-21; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:14-20]

Man

We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of his disobedience to God, man is a sinner. Apart from God, he is lost, undone, and without hope.
[Genesis 1:26-27; Ephesians 2:1-3; Romans 3:23]

Heaven and Hell

We believe in the doctrines of eternal punishment for the lost and eternal life for the saved; hell for the unsaved and heaven for the saved.
[John 14:1-3; Revelation 20:11-15; Matthew 25:46; Revelation 21:1-8]

Salvation

We believe that salvation comes from personal repentance to God for our sin and a personal heartfelt faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, both of which come through God’s grace and not by works. Through salvation we are born again as a new creation and restored to relationship with God.
[Ephesians 2:6-10; Romans 5:1; Acts 3:19-20]

Bodily Resurrection

We believe in the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.
[Luke 24:38-4, John 20:24-29, 1 Cor 15:1-19]

Second Coming

We believe in the visible, bodily return of Christ to this earth to judge the world and to claim His Bride, the Church.
[1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 1:7; Matthew 25:31-36]

NICENE CREED 325AD

We believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
begotten from the Father before all ages,
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made;
of the same essence as the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and was made human.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried.
The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead.
His kingdom will never end.
And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life.
He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
He spoke through the prophets.
We believe in one holy worldwide and apostolic church.
We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and to life in the world to come. Amen.

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy worldwide church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

OUR BIBLICAL POSITION

Satan

We believe that Satan is a fallen, created being who is the “god (ruler) of this world.” He is the great deceiver (the father of lies) who disguises himself as an angel of light. He is  an adversary to the Kingdom of God, who keeps people separated and in condemnation. He was defeated and overthrown by Christ’s victory at the cross and resurrection.
[Luke 10:17-20; Colossians 2:13-15; Ephesians 6:10-18; Revelation 12:4; John 12:31; 2 Corinthians 4:4; 2 Corinthians 11:14; John 8:44]

Great Commission

We believe that those who follow Jesus Christ have a biblical mandate to Go and make Disciples of All Nations, baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
[Matthew 28:18-20]

Marriage

We believe that the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union. God instituted monogamous marriage between male and female and intends sexual intimacy to occur only within this union.
[Genesis 2:18-25, Matthew 19:5-6, Mark 10:6-9, Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9, 18; 7:2-5, Hebrews 13:4, Ephesians 5:21-29]

Human Sexuality

We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates man and woman as unique biological persons. These two distinct, complementary sexes together reflect the image and nature of God. Click here to read more of our full position
[Genesis 1:26-27]

Sanctity of Life

We believe each human being through the whole course of life, from their beginning in their mother’s womb through death, possesses God-given worth as His image_bearer. And is thus worthy of care and protection from the beginning of life until death.
[Psalm 139:13-16, Isaiah 49:1, Jeremiah 1:5, Matthew 22:37-39, Romans 12:20-21,  Galatians 6:10]

Our Story

The Bridge was established in February of 1996, under the name New Life at Great Bridge, as an expansion of a growing church in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake.

For 15 years, the church enjoyed an affiliation with New Life Ministries International (NLMI), a network of churches located primarily in South Hampton Roads.

In January of 2011, The Bridge adopted its new name as it amicably transitioned out of its affiliation with the NLMI churches. The elders and pastors of The Bridge acknowledge that accountability and supervision are vital to a leadership community and a healthy church.

In 2011, relational accountability was established with Vanguard Ministries, a locally based international apostolic network.

In January of 2013, The Bridge established organizational accountability with Vanguard by becoming a partner church.
